Jose Henrique, a recent addition to the UFC roster, has agreed to a two-year suspension after violating the promotionâs anti-doping policy, as announced by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday.
The violation came to light when Henrique tested positive for two metabolites of the anabolic agent nandrolone â 19-norandrosterone and 19-noretiocholanolone â during an out-of-competition drug screening on March 8, according to USADA officials.
The suspension will be retroactively enforced from the failed test date, making Henrique eligible to compete again on March 8, 2025.
âUpon being added to the UFC Anti-Doping Program, athletes are required to declare prohibited substances they have used in the previous 12 months,â USADA said.
âAn athlete who makes such declaration will not be deemed to have committed a violation but, depending on the substance, may be required to refrain from competition for a period of at least six months and provide at least two negative samples.â
In this case, Henrique failed to disclose the use of the substance on his anti-doping onboarding forms. As of now, the UFC newcomer has not publicly addressed the situation or provided any comments regarding the suspension.
The UFC is a dynamic environment where new talent constantly emerges. New fighters make their presence felt through various avenues, whether they are short-notice replacements, contenders from Dana Whiteâs Contender Series or rare straight-up additions to the roster.
At 20 years old, Henrique (6-1) has already established an impressive track record. Despite his third-round knockout defeat at the hands of Yusaku Kinoshita on Dana Whiteâs Contender Series in August 2022, the 6-foot-3 welterweight boasts an 80 percent finishing rate. The promising fighter signed with the UFC in March after securing a third-round knockout victory over Alan Silva at a Shooto Brazil event.
Other than Henrique, the UFC has also recently signed several other fighters. Notable gs from last month include Felipe Bunes, Muin Gafurov, Diego Lopes, Muhammadjon Naimov and Ketlen Souza.
