Trey Lance shared his excitement for the 2023 season at the recent â49ers Talkâ with NBC Sports Bay Area while attending George Kittleâs annual Tight End University event in Nashville, Tennessee.
The San Fransisco 49ers quarterback was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and was named starter heading into the 2022 season. However, he faced several challenges in his early years with the team.
During the preseason of his rookie year, he suffered a broken finger. Then, in Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season, he sustained a season-ending ankle injury while still recovering from the finger injury.
Despite the rough first two years, Lance assured fans he was doing great.
âIâm in a great spot physically, mentally, and just excited for this year,â Lance told interviewer Jennifer Lee Chan.
Lance was a popular fantasy football pick during his first two seasons. He showed potential for becoming a top-tier quarterback, throwing for 603 yards in 2021 and 194 yards in 2022.
âI like to play. Thatâs why I came here, so not having that opportunity is definitely tough, and last year was part of it. Itâs just a bump in the road and Iâm rooting for it,â said Lance.
Lance has played only eight games in his first two seasons with the San Francisco team.
When he was out due to an injury, Jimmy Garoppolo reclaimed the starting role before Brock Purdy took over last season. However, as Purdy was down with an injury in the NFC Championship Game, the starting job is again up for grabs.
With Purdy sidelined, Lance and Sam Darnold are vying for the QB2 job and a potential Week 1 start. Both quarterbacks have been taking most of the off-season reps.
While Darnold is still learning Kyle Shanahanâs system, Lance already had two seasons to learn the playbook, giving him the upper hand.
Niners star tight end George Kittle is on Lanceâs side. He maintained that Lance was âdefinitely a starting quarterback.â
âGet that guy some reps and he has an incredibly high ceiling⌠Thatâs all it is,â said Kittle.
