The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (NYBBWA) has awarded Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis García the Babe Ruth accolade as the 2023 postseason MVP.
A dinner event to formally recognize the winners is scheduled for January 27, 2024. The event typically sees attendance from high-performing players, baseball sports insiders, Cy Young winners, Jackie Robinson Rookies of the Year, Managers of the Year across leagues and MLB’s Most Valuable Players.
The Cuban native has come a long way since he ed the Rangers in 2020, where he hit .323 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs in the 2023 postseason. The outfielder also averaged 1.108 OPS and .382 OBP in the 2023 Career and Postseason, an overall increase from his 2023 regular career stats.
The 30-year-old became the American League Championship Series MVP after assisting Texas in outperforming the Houston Astros in seven games. In addition, García successfully hit a walk-off home run against Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Miguel Castro during Game 1 of the World Series.
Other than García, the association awarded other high-performing players, including Francisco Lindor and Gerrit Cole.
New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole won the Sid Mercer/Dick Young “New York Player of the Year” award after earning 210 total points from the 30 first-rank votes by the voters from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s voters.
The award was a long time coming for Cole after never winning a Cy Young Award despite his stellar on-the-field performance. The pitcher had previously earned a spot in the top five positions when playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Yankees.
New York Mets shortstop Lindor won the Joe DiMaggio “Toast of the Town” award in the 2024 NYBBWA Awards. Before the awarding, Lindor became the first shortstop in MLB history to have a five-hit game successfully with at least one home run and two triples in a game against the Diamondbacks on July 6, 2023.
The 30-year-old simultaneously won his third career-wide Silver Slugger accolade and the gold glove finalist position during the 2023 postseason awards.
